Hi.  It's been a busy few months.

This year, it looks like I'll be doing a lot of travelling alone.  For that reason and others, I want to be able to defend myself.  I want to learn a martial art, but I don't know which kind.

What I want is to be able to defend myself, as I said.  I don't want to attack people, or hurt them.  I want to be able to put ( Read more... )

I'm a black belt in Shotokan, a defense-oriented style similar to Akido. I did some Akido during the few years I was training, but remember very little of it. There was also some brazilian jiu jutsu mixed in at some point, but that would be the least practical for you.

I'm hoping to do something along these lines too! I hope you manage to find somewhere, I've no real idea where to begin looking. Personally I'm going for the women's self-defence classes though, it seems more fitting really. A part of me wants to go to the gym's MMA class because they teach the style Batman fights in, but somehow I doubt I'd quite fit in. Or be able to do it, at all. And that's probably not a good reason to do that particular style anyway.

I am useless but have some encouragement anyway! xx

I think you would make an excellent Batman fighter.

I did consider MMA, but the krav maga was easier to find.

...what is the difference?

Haven't seen Men Who Stare at Goats yet, either.:(

I'm doing an induction class into krav maga on the 5th of February to see if I like it. I like that they focus on fighting in weakened conditions, like while disorientated or tired, or with only one arm available. I want to be able to defend myself while pinned to the ground, or while drunk.

I've heard good things about Muay Thai, though, but can you tell me more about it? The problem with trying to pick one is that there are so many out there, and people tend to be quite loyal to the one they've trained to, so you have to look each one up individually to compare.:(

When I was thirteen, my mom and stepdad tried to make me do it. It was not fun.
