I'd add to the first point that some sort of living will/power of attorney/medical proxy arrangement is also an excellent idea. Fortunately I managed to persuade my mother to sign a power of attorney (it wasn't easy) before her mental condition degraded too far, and when she was no longer able to look after her own affairs I could take over and organise where she lived and how it was paid for.

And yes, at the very least the medical proxy stuff is smart at any age. I do actually have a will and medical power of attorney -- made those up a year ago, finally. Still working on getting certain family members into the same boat. It feels weird to push things like that, I suppose because it feels like you're saying you think something is going to happen to the people you love, but really it's just being prepared, like having fire insurance. You can't say, as you can with insurance, that you'll probably never need it, but that's all the more reason to do it.
