Caprica - anyone else watching?

I have very *very* mixed feelings about BSG: loved it through about midway through S3; HATED it afterwards, so much so that that hatred somewhat tarnishes my memory of the entire series. So I wasn't sure if I wanted to start watching Caprica. Really, the only thing that tempted me was the prospect of Polly Walker as an evil secret-cult-leading ( Read more... )

I've been hesitating. Also feeling resentful that they couldn't bother to give BSG an ending it deserved and that the prequel isn't about Kara Thrace's adventures in pre-Cylon Caprica. It's worth a try, then?

Hee! Would that it was!

I would happily watch a show where Kara gets to fly, kill things and drink and get into barfights in her spare time. The others can guest star.

It's worth a try *if* you're OK with slow-moving but interesting plot development, and with characters who might not grab you emotionally. (There are also issues with ethnic stereotyping and the negative way they work in non-monogamous/non-het relationships. *Sigh* Consider yourself forewarned.)

Kara Thrace would *so* not work on this show. She's a technicolor character, and Caprica is all shades of grey.

I'm watching it because I watch with friends. We used to watch BSG together and it's nice to hang out and watch something ( ... )

The one character I genuinely feel sympathy toward is Tamara Adama. She's truly an innocent caught up in something horrible that she did absolutely nothing to bring upon herself, and I think her reaction to discovering who and what she has been really interesting. I hope they feature her own storyline prominently instead of making it all about her father's search for her from this point on.

I watched the first three or four episodes of Caprica and found myself moderately interested, enough to continue through the rest of the season, I think. I've got several eps stacked up on my DVR (as well as nearly all of this season's Damages).

In the meantime I've been working my way through BSG. I'm two or three episodes into season two and I am HOOKED! It's unfortunate to hear the series falters later on. :(

ITA regarding potential Caprica fanfic. Lots of fascinating ideas to investigate.

It takes a while for the plot to build in Caprica. For me, it didn't really kick into gear until Episode 5. But I'll be curious to see your reaction!

You know, I had a pretty similar experience as you did initially--I watched the pilot episode and was deeply underwhelmed. I haven't watched any more, but I've heard it gets better. Still, I'm really not motivated to find the other episodes. It's puzzling to me that I'm this uninterested in it, because from a technical standpoint the show is very well-made, and the plot is reasonably compelling. I think it's something about the characters--as you said, it's difficult to feel empathy for them. They reside in that moral gray area that I adore, but I never felt any real contradictions in their personalities. It's as if they aren't really fleshed-out characters, but rather just an idea of what a "conflicted character" should be. Do you know what I mean? Anyway, I'm probably being too harsh, as I've only seen one episode. If you would recommend it, I might pick it up again.

The characters *are* the problem, I agree.

Some of them, frankly, are pretty two-dimensional (Joseph Adama, in my opinion). Others are more three-dimensional but aren't actually very conflicted, so it's *really* hard to like them (Daniel Graystone, for example). Amanda Graystone is actually getting more fleshed out and conflicted as the episodes go on, but...I just don't connect with her, if that makes any sense. And so on. If you need to connect to characters to feel fannish about a show -- and I think most people do -- then you might want to skip this, or maybe watch it if you're bored.

I'm still stuck on BSG; I can't make myself watch season 4.5. Thus, I haven't started watching Caprica yet, as I don't want to be spoiled more than I already am and figure that even if it is a prequel that it will have BSG info in it. I do intend on watching it someday. (Of course, considering I've had a year to finish BSG, who knows when I'll get to it.) It's good to hear others' takes on it, especially in this case, as I tend to need characters I like to enjoy a show, so this is a good warning/good preparation for me.

So far, nothing in Caprica really spoils anything in BSG that you wouldn't already know. But who knows what might happen in future episodes! So you're probably safer waiting to watch this until you get around to 4.5.
