I think I read somewhere that as we grow up, we build this picture of the cost of things in terms of dedication and practice and energy and that by the time we're adults, the difference between how much effort we THINK something should take and how much it really needs to get any good at it or really benefit from it is... well, staggering. Some people will just decide it's not worth it

Nothing wrong with that. It's how we figure out who we are and what we want and what we're unsatisfied with and all that jazz. If we didn't do that stuff, we wouldn't get any older despite the aging of the body.
