I've been having somewhat gloomy thoughts this afternoon, accompanying some gloomy googling of diabetic insulin delivery options: i.e., pens, pricks and pumps. Judging by the fact that my downward trend for blood glucose, while still downward, seems to be plateauing at around 250, I can pretty much predict that my A1c in a couple of weeks is going ( Read more... )

I know this is a serious post, but I can't help think of naughty things to say about all those pricks.

Come on over to diabetic_bears. What are you presently taking med wise? My doc doesn't see a need for insulin as long as I stay around 7.1.

I'm taking Metformin 1000mg 2x a day, and Actos (don't know the dosage offhand) once a day.

That's the maximum on metformin, but there are other drugs that be tried before insulin is started. I maintain an A1c of 6.9-7.1 with that much metformin and 10-20 mg of gylburide per day. I was using Byetta, but ran out of money for it.

You being the second person in my life posting about insulin therapy this week...

First off, there's a wonderful community on lj called diabetes. Admittedly, most of the posters are Type I, but tales of the diabetes fairy amuse me.

Second, having grown up with two insulin dependent diabetics in my house it's not the end of the world. Yes, it sucks at first, but like the original diagnosis and the adjustments made afterwords, you get used to it. If you do get put on insulin, see if your insurance covers the pump. It's probably the best thing for diabetics since low carb sliced bread.

I know another firend of mine and I compared notes and found that glucophage/metformin therapy didn't really help much. In fact, it caused spikes.
