An in-depth analysis on James T. Kirk from both universes...

I agree with everything you've pointed out here, and more.

Have you read this by any chance?

Yes! I remember that post! I loved it. And it's still as true today as it was then. Even now a lot of Reboot fics portray Kirk as the eternal fratboy and it makes me want to shake the author really, really hard... but, admittedly, I'm a bit biased, lol.

Thanks for the link, darling. I've lost it through time and it was wonderful to go visit that post again.

Which is something I honestly don't understand. There's room for more than one intelligent character in a fandom or story, and AOS/TOS has a whole crew of geniuses. No need to sacrifice characterization in the name of cheap shots, but that might be expecting too much from most of fandom.

I see the same problem in the Harry Potter fandom, especially in regards to Harry's portrayal. Canonically, he's a brilliant student when an instructor (ie Remus) takes genuine positive interest in instructing him and gives him positive direction. When the opposite happens (ie Snape), the opposite naturally occurs. Urgh.

Can't you see Harry and Jim meeting in some interdimensional watering hole, complaining about how people misrepresent them? ;)

Oh god yes, I agree with the portrayal of Harry as well. When I was more heavily involved in Potter fandom than I am now it used to piss me off. This kid survived years of neglect with his wits intact, he's not a moron, thank you kindly. And, given positive direction and encouragement, he thrives... just how does that translate to stupidity?! I don't get it. Does not compute. But, well, Harry was my Jim Kirk of the Potter world. I kind of have a type in characters I imprint on, lol.

Harry and Jim would have a field day plotting. ;-)

Do I have guilt that this post inspired a plot bunny within you... Nope, not one bit. In fact, kinda of doing fist pumps and smiling hugely, not going to lie. Bring it! Absolutely can't wait to read it. And I hereby promise to feedback the hell out of it. :D

You're right. I'm nor really anonymous in my Kirk lovin' either. In fact, I've made it blatantly obvious (if this post didn't, my fics sure have, lol). You know, I was trying to be cute with that title but I think it needs changing. Kirk lover and proud! ;)

As for AOS Kirk being young yet and rough around the edges, oh hell yes, watching him learn how to manipulate the system is going to be great fun. XD

Of course he will stumble on the way, of course he will, Kirk lover that I am, even I admit that he was promoted too soon in AOS. But I will say this for him, another great thing about the character, he's one of those who does learn from his mistakes (<- pretty much summed up the entire plot of 'Undiscovered Country', didn't I? ;))

Edited for clarification.

Awww thank you, darling *glomps*. I'm so tickled you liked it.

So I was going through my flist and I noticed that YOU HAVE WRITTEN A FIC! OMG, YAY!!!!!!

... the only problem being that I haven't seen 'The Eagle' yet *sheepish grin*. Need to do that so I can read said fic. I've got all this incentive now. :D

Err, well I have attempted to write fic at least.

I don't think you need to know a whole lot about The Eagle in order to follow the plot of my story lol. It's mostly porn. Ear porn. But you should definitely check out The Eagle whether you decide to read my fic or not :D
