Did I say "happy outcome" ? hmmm. (the old Autism Speaks controversy)

[EDIT: I have just received a PM to the effect that the offending thread on that forum has now been modified! woot!]Would appreciate some feedback from the autistic community here, on this one. I was really happy this time last week, since the motivating force behind the event in question (herself the mother of an autistic child) had looked into ( Read more... )

that's pretty awful. AS is still taking in more money than they give and they have done the same thing at my school. I unpromote them as much as I can without revealing my status.

it is appalling to watch them collect money and support big salaries and an office in midtown manhattan while people who are seriously impaired but able to speak slip further into the background.

I wish ASAN had a good publicist - that might change things.

Following over here from "Aspergers" - interesting. I'm a gamer, and if a game forum I was in started pushing those (censored adjective) (censored noun) at Autism Speaks, I'd be leaving it. They absolutely do NOT speak for me. I'm perfectly capable of speaking for myself, and most of what I have to say about my own place on the spectrum is the opposite of their ideas.

Wow, they actually deleted your posts and you're actually leaving?

Make alternate plans anyway. Don't let them mess up your business by stonewalling.

It seems so simple from here, that they could switch to donating to ASAN instead of autism speaks. Do they even know about it? But probably far too late if people's egos got involved.

What's the forum link? I kind of want to go check it out.

Hmm, well posting the link would kinda defeat the object of supressing identifying info, right? :D
But since it's you...go check yer inbox

forgot to say: they DO,indeed, know about ASAN cos i sent them a link, which the lady in question (the mother) followed up.

She is certainly going to donate to better charities next time and is open to further suggestions.

The donation was already being split with something called "Gamer Kidz", to be fair, which looks to be thoroughly worthy :)

It presently looks like the lack of of movement in the public domain is largely due to her co-organisers being left to their own devices, this past week.

One won't speak to me, the other is dismissive when he does.
