From Bashful to Brazen: The Indescreet Breasfeeder's Manifesto

That's a great article, and here's the manifesto.

Indiscreet Breastfeeding Manifesto
  • I will nurse my child anytime, anywhere, no matter who is present or what I am wearing.
  • I will bare my breast with pride and confidence.
  • I will not apologize for nourishing and nurturing my child.
  • I ( Read more... )

You know..this is how I felt when I was breastfeeding my two. I fed them wherever I was when they needed it, including the little restaurants in Walmarts, other restaurants, parks, museums, the pediatrician's office while they were getting their vaccinations (Wes didn't even cry the first time because he was too busy nursing..heh), malls, Bristol Rennaisance Faire...wherever we were. I was not big on putting a blanket over my kid so that other people would not be offended by *gasp* my breast...not to mention the fact that on the few occasions where I did try to "be discreet" my babies were having none of it. They were used to nursing with nothing over their faces at home and they were not impressed with not being able to see mommy when nursing. I wore front hooked sports bras most of the time (after getting over the whole nursing bra thing...some of them are just downright annoying and the cotton front-hooked sports bras I got at walmart for under 7 dollars were much more comfortable, affordable, and practical) and so I rarely had more ( ... )

I waited a bit longer than average to have my kid, too. Someone on the board I got the article from said it's about being confident about what you're doing, and I agree with that. I don't act ashamed or embarrassed when I do it. I meet people's eye with a smile and just go back to what I'm doing.

As for covering baby's head/face, yeah. Hannah hates that, too. The hooter hider's great for that because it holds the fabric away from our bodies, so I can see her.

How much did you LOVE to stare into their eyes while they nursed? It's one of my favorite things ever! :)

I have never heard of the hooter hider. Might have come in handy I guess in some situations but honestly...I never felt embarassed about feeding my babies what was best for them. I was so grateful to have healthy children, especially at my age...and I enjoyed every minute of the time (ok maybe except those middle of the night feedings where I'd had no sleep and wished Bill had lactating boobs..hehe) they were nursing and it ended way too soon, especially the second time since I knew that Olivia was the last baby I'd nurse.
As for that eye contact while nursing...it's one of the best things in the world. I miss it...but there are other things that make me happy now...and Olivia still gets in my lap and snuggles with me even at 5 years old...so it's all good. :)
Here she is when she was a wee one. :)

That's an awesome picture of Olivia. Those eyes!!

I have this one, which I took on my phone (which is why it's so dark). I'm going to try to get some better ones one of these days.
