I did my part over the weekend

Nov 03, 2008 22:01

This past weekend, Equality Arizona (our statewide GLBT advocacy group) held a "Weekend for Change" in which they had quite an array of activities to get out the vote and make one last push to defeat Prop 102 and elect some new (democratic/progressive) faces to our state legislature. I appreciate how they picked up the ball with Prop 102 after ( Read more... )

I got a No on 102 robocall over the weekend. I thought that was neat. God, I hope this goes down in flames. Killing it TWICE ought to be enough, right? Or is this damn thing going to come back more times than Jason and Freddy Krueger combined?

Cool! I know Steve May had talked about doing robocall during a couple of the "strategy" calls I dialed into, so I'm glad to see that it actually happened.

Unfortunately, I think that, unless this thing is defeated by a large margin (which it won't be - it will be very close), they will be back every two years, like Jason and Freddy (great analogy!).

If Arizona is successful in gaining pro-equality majorities in our legislature (very likely!) and if Gov. Napolitano doesn't bail on us for an Obama cabinet post, we might be able to get marriage or at least civil unions through the legislature in the next two years. However, if we do, you know the religious reich will be back in two years. Of course, they will have to spend half a million dollars to gather signatures for a petition (like they did in 2006) because they won't be able to get the legislature to put it on the ballot (like they did this year).

But if Napolitano bails, we get wingnut Secretary of State Jan Brewer elevated to governor - and progress halts.

The drama never

When I voted this morning there was a stack of No on 102 pamphlets on chair just outside the 75 foot limit. I was pleased.

The VoteNoProp102 team in Tucson has done a great job organizing - unlike Arizona Together here in Phoenix who did a great job with the TV commercial and messaging strategy, then dropped the ball on everything else.

In 2006, Pima county (Tucson) and four other southern AZ counties carried Prop 107 to defeat. In fact, if the other four counties had tied 50-50, Pima would still have carried the state.

I hope they can carry the rest of us this time too. But there will be plenty of people voting No up here, too.

We'll do our part but if it passes, look for Baja Arizona to become the 51st state. :-)
