Adding fuel to the depressive fire

French politicians have reacted with horror to an anti-Semitic attack on a woman and her baby on a train.

A gang of young men cut her hair, slashed her clothes and drew swastikas on her body, before overturning the pram in which her infant was lying.

So I read this article, then I read Simon's recounting of Selena's funeral, and now I'm ready for, oh, maybe a play by Jean Genet.

It's the passengers who did nothing while that woman & child were attacked that amazes me. I can say that knowing that I've intervened when someone was threatened in public. I called the cops when my neighbor's boyfriend wouldn't stop beating on her in our parking lot, as I stood at an open window yelling at him to stop. And a couple other incidents that come to mind, where the people with me did nothing - and my opinion of them changed permanently.

Yeah, these guys had knives, but someone could have left the car and called the conductor.

Grrr.

How sickening. Honestly, someone could have done SOMETHING to stop that.

The horror here goes so much further than just the attack. The people around her did nothing - nothing! A woman with a child gets attacked and not a soul helps her all because they think she's Jewish. Remember you bystanders, the warmest place in hell is saved for the indifferent in a moral crisis.

Y'know -- like she did anybody any favors by doing that? The old "Boy who cried wolf" thing and all.

Well, she's *French* - which means sense is optional. They think Jerry Lewis is funny.
