the day of the doctor

On the whole, I rather enjoyed it. There were parts where I rolled my eyes and went, "Of course Moffat wrote this" because there are some beats that he is very much in love with, but, along with The Night of the Doctor, it's nice to know that he can still write a story I can enjoy for the most part

More spoiler-y stuff. )

Have I got it right that Nine wasn't in this solely because C.E. didn't want to be in it? Because after Eight in "Night of," One's story in "Adventure" and the other live Five(ish) in the after-show, I thought they did a thorough job of including everyone.

Yeah, as far as I know, it was down to CE not wanting to be in it. I heard that he and Moffat actually had a meeting, but nothing came out of it. Which sucks because, like I said, Nine is very much MY Doctor and his non-appearance was very much apparent, but I guess nothing could be done about it.

We think alike still! So glad someone else noticed Ten's face in that scene...my viewing partners didn't, and I was flipping out.

I totally agree about John Hurt. He gave a great performance, but I wish that character hadn't been created. I would really have loved to have seen my Doctor, Nine. I would also have been very happy if, instead of a 7-minute webisode, Paul McGann got to be the Doctor who fought the Time War and appeared in the 50th.

I was also so relieved that the War Doctor had to forget Rose's face so she was spared being made into (as you so aptly put it) one of Moffat's magical mystery girls. I would have liked if the Moment showed herself to Ten and Eleven at the end so we could have seen Ten interacting with Rose's likeness, but this is definitely better than the potential for screwing up that could have happened under Moffat. And Billie gave such a good performance!

Yeah, much as I liked Hurt, I would have loved for the role to go to McGann. Big Finish has gone a long way to making the transition from movie!Eight to pre-War!Eight very believable and he would have been amazing to watch on screen again, beyond the seven minutes of the special.

Much as McGann could have been great in the special (and I wish they had used him in that final sequence instead of archival footage), I think it's best he just had the prequel short. It gave him a chance to stand on his own in an legitimately good episode (regardless of length, and ancillary media notwithstanding) as opposed to just being one of many. McGann is pretty much the sole reason I'd have wanted to see the '96 movie spin off into a series, so it's great to see him get his own sendoff.

THIS! You concisely captured exactly what I've been thinking about the episode after re-watching it.
