Wow, you've gotten further than I did. I signed up for a driver's license at the Führerscheinstelle, but never actually got around to take the test. I bought the practice exams (in English) and studied them, but never felt confident enough to take the test. I probably should have taken a class, but (at the time) it wasn't mandatory, so I opted for self-study.
It was also strange that I couldn't seem to figure out if there was a driving manual (like you get in florida) to study other than the practice tests. I asked around amongst my German friends and they all said, "no, you just get the practice tests."
Of course now I've been here so freaking long I'd have to start the process from the beginning like any other German without a license. Though having a car and a license is starting to become really attractive.
My father (a German) recently renewed his in two days while he was here on vacation, which goes against all the rules. Apparently that means it can be done quickly! (if you know the right people)
I think you should try for your license. Since you already have a license from the states, the driving part should not be so hard for you. There are those mandatory night driving, autobahn driving parts that I am most certain you can easily do in 1 session each, unlike the beginners here. You do have an advantage that you have experience
( ... )
Sounds like a lot of work! All I did was go to the driver's license place, take my written and vision tests, then was able to take the driving test the same day. And POOF! I had my license.
