4 miles in 40 minutes

I've been working out a lot in the last year and training for nothing in particular - but now I have a goal! Mat emailed out about the Mass Dash relay race. From Mt Greylock to Boston Harbor, 200 miles. It'll be around 12 of us taking turns doing 6 mile legs of the run. The race is a fundraiser for Dana Farber and Jimmy Fund. If you want to get your endurance up for longer runs, and keep approximately the same pace for now, the best way to do that is a type of interval training, where you run a mile, walk a mile and keep switching off. That way your heart is still pumping at ~150 while walking, so you are getting the cardio benefits of your full workout, but you are not overextending your muscles in an unnatural way. ... Then you slowly cut the walking down and up the running, and soon it will be all 6 miles at your 10 min/mile pace.
