Meme: The Toast's books white guys own

Meme

The Toast gives a list of 79 books which, allegedly, all white men own.
Bold those you own.
Italicize those you have read.
Underline those you've never heard of would have to be paid to read.
Bonus points if you're not a white male.
1. Shogun, James Clavell
2. Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut
3. A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole
4. ( Read more... )

I'm scratching my head over this. Fail to see the point. The list (I did look up The Toast's original piece) doesn't seem to be funny, or even satirical, and it doesn't seem to evoke any recognition of truth in me. Some people own some of these books, some don't. I can't even perceive the common whiteness of these titles.

Can you explain the point to me?

I'd wager the number of white men who have read 79 books of any kind is a low percentage, mitigated by educational level.

You sound a bit cynical. I'm not clever enough to be male, but 79 books is a too-busy-to-read-enough year for me. It feels as if there is a missing step here, possibly an and/ or slash in the sentence, "Underline those you've never heard of would have to be paid to read," though.

You and I are probably several standard deviations from the norm, if 70 percent of men didn't read ONE book in a year. And clever denotes social intelligence, which women tend have the upper hand in.

I wonder if a sample size of under three thousand can be called representative?

Anyhow, if I were any sort of intelligent, I'd be male. Q.E.D.
