Since I'm staying home with Sophia I figured it made the most sense to make her baby food. It's quick and easy and gives us an excuse to go the local farmer's markets every weekend or so. I just make up a big batch and freeze it in the ice cube tray, then put it into labeled baggies. Well, with our upcoming vacation I've been trying to figure out ( Read more... )

One of my best friends is very much into quality food for her son and she too makes his own food, like you do for Sophia. On occasion she can't do that and she JUST blogged about a new brand of baby food that is 100% organic and has none of those nasty and unhealthy fillers and preservatives, it is sold in grocery stores, too!

Her blog is [ http://www.youaretheroots.com ] and it is the second blog post down if you want to read all about it, she even has a giveaway right now for a whole set of the food! :)

Thanks for the link to your friend's blog, she makes some really good points about Happy Baby. The one problem I'm running into with the prepackaged pouches is that most of them contain foods that Sophia hasn't tried yet. I guess I need to get on the ball and start introducing her to more variety.

I think the tuna oil is for the DHA. It kind of grossed me out too, though fish oil is in a bunch of DHA supplements nowadays, and Corey LOVED this one Gerber food that happened to be made with fish oil (and at the time, he was so picky and hardly eating anything that I didn't care). I think a lot of Earth's Best doesn't have additives, and the base Gerber stuff (organic and not) without the added DHA should just be food, water and maybe some sort of acid for preservation.

You're welcome to use our kitchen and make some batches of baby food while you're here. I've actually been meaning to make some for Malcolm, but all I've done so far is microwave yams. I'm feeling especially lazy. Bananas and avocado might also be a good idea since it takes zero preparation, just mashing.

Is she eating a lot? Malcolm still doesn't care for anything, really. I can get him to maybe eat one spoonful of food when I feel motivated enough to feed him.

I ended up picking up a couple Earth's Best and will probably bring along an avocado for a little variety. Or maybe we'll try banana this week for an extra option. Either way I wouldn't mind hanging out in your new kitchen and making Malkies a snack :)

She eats okay. Some days she is really into eating and will have two "cubes" mixed with a bit of cereal, but then there are days like today where I feel like I'm just dumping it down the drain. I'm sure her teething has a lot to do with it. So far she has tried avocado, sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots. Since I made a ton of sweet potatoes, 4 medium sized ones, I've been mixing one cube of those with either carrots or peas. I was really trying to hold off on fruits because I've heard they can make them not want to eat veggies, but I think it's time since I'm running out of veggie options.

(Sorry, that ended up being a really long answer)

Personally, I'm not sure if introducing fruit really does much in the way of making them refuse veggies. But then again, I have a super picky kid that ate mostly fruity stuff as a baby, and a not-so-picky one that refused to eat pears and apples for a year or so. Breastmilk is pretty sweet already, so they're used to sweet foods.

I'm also being really lazy about waiting between trying new foods with Malcolm. He's had bananas, avocado, carrots, squash and sweet potato, but he's really reluctant to eat any of it. I know what you mean about dumping stuff down the drain... it sucks, especially when it's full of the breast milk that I spent precious time pumping.

I actually started using a little bit of formula in her cereals because I just couldn't handle wasting all the breast milk. I rarely have time to pump so just watching it all go down the drain was too much for me. I figure she's getting less than an ounce of breast milk in her whole diet, so I'm not too concerned.

Does he like two things mixed together? That's how Sophia has been enjoying a lot of foods. I mix them with a little bit or cereal and water. I'm sure he'll find something he likes to eat soon.

I DON'T buy Gerber if I can help it. I usually buy the pouches of baby food - Happy Baby/Tots, Plum Organics, and Ella's Kitchen are all good brands that we've used. When we spend our WIC checks, we can't buy organic, and only have the options of Beech Nut or Gerber, so I buy Beech Nut as much as possible.
Gerber is owned by Nestle and is on my shit list.

Oh, and if you're looking for jars - Earth's Best is also good.

I ended up picking up a few Earth's Best because all the pouches I was seeing contained foods she hasn't tried yet. I guess I need to get better about introducing her to more things. How dumb that WIC won't let you buy organic. Sure it's more expensive, but it's also healthier.
