Last Wednesday night I watched a film directed by Sean Penn called Into the Wild, based on a novel by Jon Krakauer. It was a good film and you should see it, but what made it doubly interesting for me in hindsight was how it related to the poem by Matthew Arnold “The Scholar Gypsy” that we looked at in the tutorial the next day.

I’ve been reading the Victorian authors that we are covering in class this week and I got to thinking that it’s a funny thing that the Enlightenment period was called the Enlightenment period when it seemed such a dry time emotionally and artistically speaking, and that the word Enlightenment suites the Romantic and Victorian eras far better at ( Read more... )

I was just thinking on the way home from the art gallery about the link between art and literature throughout the ages.
