Anyone who would still insist that the intention of the founding fathers was to establish a Christian nation should review a document written during the administration of George Washington. Article 11 of the Treaty with Tripoli declared in part that "the government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion..." ( ( Read more... )

Interesting that you word the time frame of the document as though it was written by and signed by George Washington (the father of our country). In fact the original treaty was written in Arabic in Tripoli without the presence of George Washington or any other important historical figure otherwise noted as a founding father. David Humphreys was appointed to negotiate the treaty and he was the American who originally signed the treaty. The treaty then went from Tripoli to Algiers to Portugal and, then the U.S., while being signed at each stop. Congress nor the president at the time, John Adams, (not George Washington) had the power to cancel the terms by the time they first saw it ( ... )

Wasn't America founded as a free country by people who risked a 66% death rate crossing the Atlantic to pursue religious freedom?

It would be much more accurate to say that our country was founded BY people who believed in Christianity, but not founded on the religion itself. Coincidence doesn't make reason any more than statement makes fact.

Also, I'm going to assume that you were in no way taking my first comment seriously, but on the off chance that you actually did, for whatever reason, allow me to say: don't. Only an idiot would say something like that seriously, and an idiot I am not.
I'll chalk it up to the fact that the vocal inflection involved in conveying the facetiousness behind the original comment was lost in the translation from thought to text, and just give you the benefit of the doubt.

Cool?
Cool.

Well, I did word that incorrectly, that's true. I didn't mean to say that the country was founded upon Christianity, but actually by Christians. Thanks for pointing that out. However, just curious where you found your "66% death rate crossing the Atlantic to pursue religious freedom" statement? I do know that 47.23% of all statistics are made up on the spot, so I'm going to have to assume that to be true with that remark ( ... )

In all honesty, I didn't really want to take the time to go into a book or wikipedia to look anything up. I don't particularly care that much about this conversation.

You win as far as looking things up, making accusations based purely on what you think will make you look right, and generally spending more time than necessary on a conversation that is, after all, "just for fun."
