The contest entry/second version
Play me a little melody...

The first version

His finger tickled over the ivory and ebony keys. Slowly, painfully, a melody began to form sliding and shifting through the air. Trails of lust and love and fear twirled and writhed in dark pungent trails of A minors and C sharps and B flats. Pouring from his soul, from his fingers, music wrote the story of his love in dark bass and light treble. Hope twined itself into the notes seducing the air, deepening it and lifting it.

His eyes remained closed so he could watch the memories play behind his eyelids. The moment of meeting, looking into scared and defiant brown eyes and feeling an instantaneous empathy.
A few years later, a coming-of-age birthday where he stole a first kiss and saw shock and confusion in those beautiful brown eyes. Another year, another birthday, and a second kiss finally followed that first gentle one. Only this kiss wasn’t gentle, wasn’t merely a soft touch of lips to lips. No. This kiss was all crushed lips and battling tongues. It could’ve gone further. He was ready, had been for over a year but he put the breaks on. Demanded a little more than heated kisses and sweaty sex.

Lost in his memories and music, he smiled at remembering the sweaty sex a couple of weeks later. Neither of them cared much for self-deprivation and long sessions of foreplay wore out self-control and righteous romantic notions quickly. Less than a year and another birthday, he thought of their bond, their ability to communicate with a look or a gesture. The sex remained sweaty and amazing but sometimes, oh sometimes, the romance of it nearly brought him to tears. And the laughter mingling with passion, with affection brought him to his knees when no one was looking. Two birthdays later and they were living separately, sneaking to see each other for a myriad of reasons both refused to discuss during their short times together.

The hollow feeling rang through the air, sharp and brittle notes tearing at the heady and seductive fabric of the song. The desperation hurried from his fingers and into the keys, pushing the song on in a frenzy of intense longing and even more intense anger. Anger at society, at work, at everything that tried to tear them apart day after day.

Then a scent drifted into his subconscious and a birthday from just a few days ago played in his mind. The melody smoothed out and became almost cheerful. He saw friends and family, those capable and willing to accept, standing or sitting. People laughing and talking and those lips brushed against the back of his neck. After the celebration, after the loved ones went to their home, they slid together into bed. Always a rediscovery of the most treasured being in his universe, he thought. The music wept with joy at the sweetness of the discovery, of the underlying knowledge that nothing can last forever.

A final warm, yet soul-shattering, note hung in the air and his fingers stilled on the keys. A thumb swiped an unnoticed tear from his cheek, startling him.

“I didn’t mean to wake you.”

A gentle smile, one saved specifically for him, appeared. “Your absence woke me. Not your playing.” A hand stroked over the keys gently as if trying to discover the magic of them. “I love hearing you play.”

“It is about you, about us.” He sighed. “They always are somehow.”

“I know. Each time you play, I feel you inside me.” Catching the smirk, Changmin grinned. “I didn’t mean it that way but since you brought it up…”

Yoochun took his lover, knowing the night would write its own song.
