Although Iwate gave up on JET back around 2008, former Iwate JETs have not turned our backs on our Japanese homes.  Over the last 24 hours, 65 people have joined a facebook group to help brainstorm & share ideas of how to fundraise and give back to our community.  I just had to share how proud I am of everyone there ( Read more... )

Just wanted to share in case anyone is interested: my friend is auctioning off part of her kimono collection, 100% of proceeds to go to relief efforts in Japan. Please visit her post and bid! Also: feel free to cross-post if you know anyone who may be interested.

You're right, there's still former JETs there, and JETs who came in during the final year(s) who are finishing up their contracts. On the one hand I understand the prefecture cutting their budget and sweeping out JET in favor of cheaper, independent ALTs, but in a way it's a shame.

Thanks so much for offering to keep in touch! I've read of one confirmed Canadian death in Iwate (name unreleased by the press) and rumors of another through the grapevine. :(

Oh cool! What a relief to hear there are still JETs (of every persuasion!) in Iwate. I left in 2008 and have been only half as much in touch as I wanted to be since then... I'm so glad there's still some kicking around.

I'll keep an ear to the ground, too, and let you know if I hear anything. Many many thanks, again. <3
