Meta: A DC Tarot?

Sep 05, 2008 23:25

Reading Trinity--even though I'm a couple of weeks behind now--has gotten me thinking about the Tarot and who I would match with the cards of the Major Arcana. So I've gone through and listed the basic meanings of each card, with my thoughts on who goes with each one. Some seemed easy to me, others almost impossible! And some characters that I ( Read more... )

That's a very interesting post.
The Star sounds a lot like Clark too, to me. :)

I did put down Clark as the Star as well, possibly! But his ties to the sun kind of clinched that one for me, it worked so well. :)

I love the idea :)

RobinI as teh Fool is such a yummy idea.

SOOOO neeeds to be Jason Todd for Death.

I would acually put Stephanie down for Strength and Cass for Temperanace.

Stephanie! She would be good for that as well. I could so easily see Cass as the woman standing next to the lion, holding its jaws shut, but both of them have enough awesome for either card. :)

If Jason were a more positive figure right now I'd be more likely to have cast him as Death. The way Barbara turns tragedy into triumph and rebirth seems perfect for the card--but I'm really hoping in the long run DC lets Jason transcend his tragedy as well.

Cool choices for these cards. Wow, you can really spend a long time mulling over the choices.

The fool: Innocence, naivety, and spontaneity. This makes me think of Impulse, but Robin (especially young Dick) would be the classic choice ( ... )

Impulse! *facepalm* Oh, he'd be the perfect Fool! I can't believe I didn't think of him!

Also, thank you for Ma Kent, lol. She'll do the job nicely, especially in her extra role as a farmer and raiser of crops ( ... )

Commissions would be awesome! Have you heard DC Direct will be releasing a tarot deck with Vertigo characters? According to this page, the 20th anniversary set is coming out this November and features Constantine as The Fool. I bet a DCU version would be just as possible :D

Ah, I love this!

For the Fool, I'd actually use Trickster, but Dick as Robin certainly fits as well. I definitely like Renee Montoya/Question as the HP, and for the Empress I like Ma Kent. The Hierophant makes me think of Dr. Fate, actually.

Selina seems to fit Strength, to me, and Booster is definitely the Hanged man, considering what he's been through in his own title recently.

I actually prefer Bruce as the Devil, too. Security over spiritual health seems like the Mission above everything else to me. Seems like the one thing Trinity has gotten right...

But I guess there are many different interpretations for the cards, especially since each character is supposed to be a complex being unto themselves. A lot to think about, anyway! :p

I'm very won over by the idea of Impulse now! He'd even look the part, stepping blithely off a precipice with his hair flying, lol...

I still can't believe I didn't come up with Ma Kent for the Empress. *facepalm* Goddess of the crops, even...

Booster as the Hanged Man is another good one, especially with recent canon. I could also go for him as a symbol of the Wheel of Fortune, maybe with Skeets in the middle, lol.

I actually was surprised to see them cast Bruce as the Devil in "Trinity"! I assumed it was just because of the physical likeness. Maybe it's because I approached "security" differently, as more physical, personal security. Bruce doesn't seem to value his own safety that much...in fact, I would have said he sacrifices personal security constantly for a more "spiritual" goal--the well-being of others. A complicated card and a complicated person, however...

I like Lex as the Emperor a lot! And I love that Bruce could fit into that card as well. I know the reversals don't quite work that way, but considering every card has at least two ways to read it -a more positive and a more negative figure for a single card kind of makes me squee. The good son of a bitch, and the bad son of a bitch! heee!

I really like Bruce as the Magician, though, I think it suits him best. The way he changes himself and his fight for Gotham is one of eternal beginnings, for one thing, and it's as much for Gotham's physical salvation as much as it is for her soul. I think a lot of writers ignore just how arcane Gotham is or can be, and see no nuance in the fight against crime -just punching and kicking, when what Bruce does goes well beyond that -or at least it should.

After reading stinglikeabee's comment, I agree with Alan Scott's casting as Temperance! though at first I thought of Dr. Midnight ( ... )

I like Lex as the Emperor a lot! And I love that Bruce could fit into that card as well.I did pause and consider Bruce there! The governmental aspects worked better with Lex, but there's definitely versions of Bruce that work really well with the Emperor and others that work with the Magician--and yes, others with the Devil or maybe even the Moon. It depends a lot on who's writing him ( ... )
