Who said T Tunics aren't period? A simple shrift is much more period than some of the "generic ME garb" out there, particularly the underbust scoop of the "Ghawazee Coat", which I am sure you know by now is off the far end of the period-correct. Simple T-tunic design is very in-line with construction practices of the time, often with many gores added for fullness, with full salwar underneath and a sash at the hips. I have done a lot of research on this myself, so I would be curious what these people are talking about...non period...*snort*
I always loved it. It is what got me into costuming. I loved the research, and finding creative modern ways to get period effects. Playing with techniques, finding the most efficient ways to use fabric and notions...was always fun. Then joining groups like Al-Jisr and getting to hang out online talking to other people with the same passion...loved it.
I don't like to sew either, better be careful who ya tell, it might be the reason I am not a Caidan anymore. And sorry but I am not obsessively period. I am perfectly happy to use the indoor plumbing provided at most events.
I'm not obsessively period. I enjoy researching what IS period but my garb and accoutrements don't necessarily reflect that. I make an "attempt" (some attempts are better than others) and I'm learning as I go. I don't obsess about it though as then I'd never leave the house. I only use natural fabrics and that's about it for obsessive periodness. I generally use a sewing machine and I don't grow, spin or make my own fabric. ;-) The great thing about the SCA is that we are all different and value different things. SOme people are into service and some are into costume, some are into rapier and others into cross bows. It takes all kinds to make this funky club work.
Seeing well-done garb is converting me, piece by piece. I've nearly tossed out all garb over 3 years old and I'm about to toss out my garb from the past 1-3 years to keep replacing it with better and better pieces.
Getting photographed in garb is certainly a motivation, too. *blush*
