Gah, I'm still waiting for our stupid theater to get this! I love Phantom... the music and book at least, since I've never seen the play. Sounds like Joel Schumacher (however you spell that) is up to his usual weirdness. But I love the soundtrack and Gerard Butler too much to dislike the movie, whatever horrors await. ;)
Have to agree with you. The movie was, I think, a perfect illustration that what can work marvelously on stage does not, necessarily, work as well on film. You can have two characters remain nearly stationary on stage and sing a long love song in a theater; there's enough else to look at that it's not boring. But on film? The love scene on the roof was boring, uninspired, and flat.
Also. Giant crystal light fixtures mysteriously rising into place are a whole lot cooler when they're actually right in front of you.
