This is pretty intriguing...
Similar to legal hitch hiking.

I'd liken it more to organized hitchhiking...

Regardless, hitchhiking, unless I am very much mistaken, is only illegal on Alberta's highways, not within Edmonton's city limits...

Regardless even of that, we don't have any HOV lanes around here of which I'm aware...

Probably a good idea, anyway, though...

I've never seen any.

On a slightly different note, I think there are car pooling websites out there where you can actually organize car pools, but I'm not sure where the sites are or if there are any for Edmonton.

I went and registered, and found two other people in my area who go to the west end, Jasper Place, etc. but it's not at the right times. Still, the more people that sign up, the better. Maybe it will bear fruit in the future.

That is an awesome idea. Too bad we probably won't see it around these parts! It kind of reminds me of an underground rideshare.

It does look interesting; I'd like to know how it started. I've thought about carpooling since I live downtown and work SE. However my schedule is not very routine so I would probably be 'that guy' picking up or being picked up.

There is a sign promoting carpooling that I see on my way home that is on Baseline Road near the Esso refinery. I think it is carpool.ca but I cannot be sure ATM. A quick search came up with this list of options: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=Carpool+Edmonton&meta= which it is an option.

There used to be one in the University of São Paulo. Not as organised as there wasn't a queue, but the driver would usually say the destination, and whoever was interested got in the car. It usually was very safe, but you knew (as a female university student) it was a bad sign when the driver (male) asked where _you_ were going... I did get a bad ride once, who once I was in his car started asking me if I did tricks. I only went into the car because I needed to go just outside the university, and I got off at the first red light!!
As crime rates increased, I believe the habit died away...
