Late yesterday afternoon the "downsize" ax fell---and I got "chopped".

First time in my long life I've ever been without a job.

Really bad time to be unemployed, too. I see a total crash & burn in my future, and we ain't talkin' 'bout no airplanes, either. Nobody's interested in a 58 year old single white male with mild spina bifida...

Did you at least get a severance package? If not, get started on unemployment ASAP. Here, WorkForce (as it's called) also works as an employment agency. May something fall into your hands that is precisely your cup of tea!

Oww... yes, it does hurt. Intensely, in your case, if you've gone this long (and my sincere congratulations to you, sir) without unemployment biting you in the behind. But don't sell yourself short... I was surprised to find out how my own skill set (and education level) were still viable and valuable.

Well, yes, they are, but the skill set needed is a bit quirky.

If you want to stay in your town, start networking with everyone you know. If you're willing to relocate for the right job, tell everyone and offer to share your resume. I'd be glad to put in my employer's database, FWIW.

Jim, the others are right. With your list of skills and such (and you have acquired a lot of them) I think it might be worth a try to at least register with a temp agency. I know that isn't a permanent solution but it's work and it often does lead to more permanent things.
