For those who don't know it, I've stumbled into podcasting now. Well, technically, FRED has gotten into podcasting and I sort of stumbled along after him. The Butcher Block (Fred named it, not me) is going to be a quasi-regular podcast about my books and so on. The first one is all about the TV show, and addresses several fan concerns that have ( Read more... )

I don't know how to get to you otherwise, but I just had to say 'What did you do?!' The Dresden Files, Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, and A Fool's Progress are my favorite books/characters and what could have been beautifully done was bastardized. The Dresden Files are so well written, so vividly put to paper, and yet the show was allowed to rip those characters up and throw them into the fire. Almost nothing in the show was as the books were written. What happened? Maybe I've taken it a little too personally but characters that I've walked, ran, and did battle alongside have, it seems, been told that they weren't good enough for the mass media/ no imagination assholes and thus, they were changed. Dresden and his comrades were given up for the almighty dollar. Mr. Butcher, if you read this, I just had to tell you that sold out. Excitedly I await each new book from you and was happily looking forward to seeing what I thought early on would be a great show only to have heart broken. How could you?

Dude, chill. It was different. Not bad. Just different. Give it some time to flesh out a bit.

Don't get me wrong, the changes took me by surprise, too (I think I snickered when I heard "Uncle Justin", to be honest). But I thought it was fairly well done, though I was slightly disappointed that Storm Front wasn't the Pilot episode like I had read. Happily, that comes later. :) I was a little shocked by Human-Bob, too - but it made sense to have him, since Harry talks to himself so much in the first few books to get things thought through. At least with Human-Bob there's dialogue to help us keep up to speed.

That being said - Mr. Butcher, your books rock and I can't wait for the rest to come out. :) ~Peace

NERDRAGE! *Snicker*

I don't think it's reasonable to expect a tv show to follow a book exactly given the mediums are so different. Some things that work well in a book wouldn't work so well in a tv -- as the Beetle thing mentioned in podcast 01. It's also a bit much to expect every character and nuance from a whole series of books to get crammed into one 44 minute episode.

I'm pretty much on the same page as phoenix_talons ... even after reading the outrage on j-b.com/bb and the scifi.com forum. I was a little surprised at a couple of the choices they made--using the shield bracelet instead of the pentacle and the thing with the diner girl which just seems kind of weird and pointless--but most of them were shrug-worthy. The one thing I didn't like was the Doom Box. I had to giggle every time they said the words. Up until killing the skinwalker, I was expecting something a little more tricksy. It was rather anticlimactic ( ... )

Good God - I laughed at the NERDRAGE comment. Then I went to see for myself at the sci-fi forum. Apart from (almost) all of them sounding like 13 year olds, good lord they want blood spilled! O_o; Not to mention they seem to ignore the other posts which shed some light on things - like there being a Mister (or, in the words of Ivy: "KITTY!") and a Susan.

Even so, the poll they have up still gives the show at least a 'passable' rating. I can't wait for the next episode, not to mention when Storm Front shows up. :)

Where the beef? anonymous February 2 2007, 16:24:42 UTC
Where's our up front free White night chapeters? Book is doue out in about 8-10 weeks and still no freebie chapters to preview.

I'm sitting here waiting. Checking back daily and still no HD fix to hold me over.

What's up with that?

Also, when is the next Codex book going to be coming?

Thanks!

Keep up the excellent work.

The shows to not too bad but I'd like a beetle rather than an SUV thingy. Or at least get it smashed up a bit....he seems a little to prosperous at the moment.

The next Codex book will be in about a year: Captain's Fury.

White Night sample chapters will probably start appearing within a few weeks over on www.jim-butcher.com

Jim

So here I am posting on your livejournal as a fan. The news fascinates me here. Personally, the first episode left me feeling pretty flat, using the predictable 'vaguely reference a plot point then have it solve everything at the end' but the second episode really was much better.

My one major complaint is that Bob seems to have lost his perverted side which is one of the more enjoyable things about the character. However, it looks like it will shape up to be a great show.

And the Butcher block... I'd groan, but I've made much worse puns.

Bob perversion is back in episode 2. Wants to go look up a 16 year old ghost....

Also, juts a note. In the books is DuMorne Harry's uncle? I don't remember seeing that but I could have misread something.

So...what did you think of the Sci-Fi series.

Wasn't quite what I was expecting based on what you said at DragonCON.

Nice meeting you then btw.
