Did you know California passed a law stating that absurdly low amounts of lead can be present in bathroom fixtures, effective (I think) 2010, but at the time of the bill's passing there were no known alloys that could be used in place of the common ones? One type of incredibly expensive European stainless steel fixture would've been acceptable under the new law, but we're talking thousands of percent increase in cost.
Many lawmakers seem to be of the opinion, "We know more than Science. If we make laws saying Science must bend to our will, people will find ways to do it!"
Why not make a law banning cancer by 2015? *rolleyes*
