Oh, you poor thing. *offers whisky for your suffering* ;)
This was an unexpected, unintentional (on your part) and surprise birthday present for me to find on my f-list this morning!!
Happy (belated) birthday!

I'm glad that we're finally getting to see this story- we all knew something awful had happened to Elias in the field, but getting to actually read the details adds quite a bit to his overall character. And I love the fact that back then was when he realized he was in love with Ruby :)

Thank you! I'd gone into this intending simply to write about what had happened to him, and his recovery in the hospital, but as I was bouncing some stuff off of Ms. Mak, the idea off it being a nightmare of his cropped up.

*nods* I've always had sort of a vague notion of what Elias went through that day, but fleshing it out definitely helped me to get a better understanding for the character.

Elias is definitely the character who's been speaking to me the most of late--and I'm OK with that.
This is a story I wasn't sure we would get.
I wasn't entirely sure we'd get it, either. It was quite accommodating of Elias to decide to share it, even if he started talking when I had plans for the night!

It's totally normal and not at all a problem, I swear.
Just so long as it doesn't interfere with your sleep...too much. :)

I'd honestly not thought of this as a h/c fic, but of course it *totally* is!
My very favorite thing is Ruby's quiet understanding, the perfect way she responds to Elias through all of this
Ruby actually had a very small role in this--smaller than she deserved, in fact--until Ms. Mak nudged me towards maybe expanding a bit more in that bit.
I find that incredibly lovely in a very specific Elias-y way.
*nods* There are myriad things I love about Elias, but one of the things I love best about him is actually his coping mechanisms. Maybe that's why I'm totally ok periodically breaking him...
Something about the directness, the businesslike statement of "this is how it is, now I will go deal with it" without thought or reservation - I just find it very brave and moving. There's that line in there about Elias being resilient, that ties directly into your thought above. His ability to ground himself in the *present* is what enables him to keep going--to be so brave when the odds really aren't that great. ( ... )
