Recently I've remembered why I took the job at the Dog in the first place. There's only so much television you can watch before you feel as if your brain is about to slide out your ears. I've been taking Steve for a lot of walks because I'm so bored and because I don't think it's a good idea for him to be at the shop with Terry. At least not ( Read more... )

You mean you haven't left yet?

And you suggested Eloise get extra pay for being forced into divers dangerous situations, acts et cetra, and, if I'm going to start doling that out, I'll have to start cutting cheques for all my friends, it sometimes seems.

Ha ha ha.

And you wouldn't have to write many cheques really, you haven't got a lot of friends.

True, but they'd likely mostly have to be for relatively large amounts of money, to make up for what they're meant to make up for, no?

You probably owe me millions, come to think of it.

You do have quite a habit of courting disaster.

I mentioned it last week, I've got some business to attend to there. And besides that, tomorrow is Bastille Day so I'm going to...do French things. I spent all evening practising La Marseillaise.

French things like kissing? I never lived in France for Bastille Day. Rather sorry, at that.

If you kiss someone in France and/or a French person then it's all French kissing innit?

I think I was eight the last time I was in France on Bastille Day, but I can't remember it very well. We were at the villa in Antibes and I remember sitting on the beach with Frédérique and her telling us about Fête de la Fédération but then I got bored and went swimming. Elizabeth stayed to listen though, but she was only two and it was harder for her to get away.

You can come to the Banshee, if you want. Harry's no help to me when he's spending all his time trying to get dates.

Ernie would never forgive me if I came to work for you, darling. Besides, Tubby said I could come back any time I like. But I'd probably have to wrestle Winston to get my job back.

To be honest, I think I'm done with working in pubs. I need to think about some sort of responsible adult job.

I can handle Ernie. Tubby, I'm not so sure.

Responsible adult job? And here you've been claiming to be gentry all these years.

Ernie's easy to handle. Well, maybe not so much now what with Barbara and all.

My father worked very hard and I think somehow that rubbed off on me. Poor old thing, he's probably rolling over in his grave now that I've said he was a good influence on me.

Haven't you heard, Jones? In 2006, you can hold off until your thirty or so for responsibility. if things aren't changing back

You're just saying that to make yourself feel better, Cleave. Or perhaps because the idea of working with me sends little tingles down your spine.

I have no guilt over the fact that I'm working in a pub and playing quidditch with my adult life.

Tingles of horror?
