This is the best thing I've found today that sums up how I feel about the EU campaign and result, so archiving it here for future reference. From an Australian journalist, because everything I read in the British press is infused with too much emotion for my stomach, especially today:  Whipping Up Fear To Sway the Brexit VoteAs for me, I managed to ( Read more... )

I'm so glad you're okay, and doing well generally. :) Good luck with your new PhD thesis!

Good luck with the new PhD Thesis. *hug* Get well soon and I hope to come and see you in Kent (and take you to The Sportsman!).

As for referendum, I think we're agreed.

Can't wait to invite you - we can spend the day in Canterbury and you can show me all the best haunts.

I just read this about the referendum, in case you're interested. I lived in the North and North-East for quite a while when I was young, and a lot of this resonates with me. It's policy analysis, I prefer this kind of writing to a lot of journalism, no worries if it's not for you: http://www.perc.org.uk/project_posts/thoughts-on-the-sociology-of-brexit/

I'm glad you're okay! It just goes to show what can happen in a blink of an eye.

Everyone is agog at the news from Britain. *hugs* You will get through it, although the hows and whys don't seem very clear right now.

Thank you, Mary. I appreciate the kinds thoughts and you wading through my health biography. It's a part of my story I keep having to tell myself over and over again, perhaps this will be the last time for a bit.

As for the referendum, I've worried about UK politics since learning about voting systems at school. John Smith dying in 1994 was fairly crushing, I hated Blair from the get go and felt very out of step with my peers for a long time. Having been something of an ostrich for the past few years, it's time to get my head out of the sand and take an interest in the world around me. I think I'm starting to wrap my head around it, see the above link in my reply to Laura's comment above if you're interested.

I had wondered how you were dealing with the contentious election. We were quite surprised at the outcome, but then, most people I know thought Donald Trump was just trying to get another reality show. The article was clear about the fear mongering that seems to have taken over the elections on both sides of the Atlantic.

I admire your doing research to improve your mobility but am sorry that you fell. My balance is no longer what it was so I am quite cautious.

Good luck on the new thesis and on the eventual move.

Donald Trump *was* just trying to get another reality show. He succeeded, too. It's called the Presidential Election. Doesn't get more real, or more showy than this. :-)

Thank you, Kate. How are you? I'm grateful to be sleeping better this past week.

The answer is, I dealt with it by ignoring it mostly until yesterday. I hoped that enough people would have ties with Europe to feel a connection with it, but I was wrong. Now I'm informing myself about the bigger pictue and aiming to keep a closer eye on events.

Sorry to hear about your fall. I'm recovering my inner calm (or whatever) about the referendum but I'm still disappointed. We've been considering coming back to the UK but will definitely be holding off on that one for a while. I'm still angry with David Cameron - he's pretty much gambled Britain's future for a chance of perpetuating his career. Selfish so-and-so.

I think we're on the same page :(.

Sorry to hear this has affected your long-term plans to return to the UK. On your behalf and also selfishly, as I'd like us to be in the same country! It's hard to say what things will look like after this. We'll have to wait and see.

There was a chance a few months ago that Dave would be without work (didn't eventuate) and we decided that it that happened we would come back. as it didn't, we thought we would wait until Sarah finishes the never-ending degree. Now, we will have to wait and see. If the pound doesn't recover, we won't be able to afford the move (that nice cottage in the Dales might be a bit too expensive).

How do you mean? Wouldn't a weaker pound make property prices more affordable for you in England?
