Since I'm switching temp jobs this week, UPS had a little going-away party for me on Friday. I was really quite touched and surprised, since most places don't normally do that sort of thing for temps. They gave me a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble as a thank you, and ( last night I ordered )

Congrats on the job switch! blackturtleneck February 3 2008, 23:13:15 UTC
And wow, that must have been a great gift certificate! How long do you think it'll take you to get through all these?

I've been meaning to pick up Oryx and Crake for a while now. Let me know what you think once you've finished it. I snagged "The Artist's Way" yesterday when out walking with Dave. I'm just about through the first chapter and it's so good.

About two months, probably. I'll let you know what I think of Oryx and Crake.

I'm not a fan of Julia Cameron but I find reading those kinds of books motivating even when I think their author is a bit dippy. I hope it inspires you!

I wish I could get through that many books in two months. ;-)

I find Julia Cameron a bit dippy too but the book was highly recommended by a person who's opinions I trust. When I flipped through it at Chapters, I found it was full of questions and exercises that connected with me so I think it'll have been worth the $40 I spent on it. Oh, I should mention that I bought "The Complete Artist's Way" which is the edition that has all three of her related books in one; "The Artist's Way", "Walking in this World" and "Finding Water". All of them look fairly useful for my needs, and of course I'll be reading it with my flake filter securely intact so I can filter out any fluff and stick to the meat of it.

The exercises can be really helpful. A lot of people swear by it. For my purposes, In The Palm Of Your Hand has been the most useful, but it's very narrowly focused on poetry and would therefore be useless to you.

Annie Proulx...didn't she write Brokeback Mountain? I haven't seen the movie, but that was a hell of a short story.

Yes, I believe she did. For all I know, it's in that collection.
