Finally an answer

The Boy has been progressively getting worse with school. He's taking AP classes but he's getting Cs and Ds. He keeps telling me he has trouble retaining information. I thought it was from not getting enough sleep since he stays up until 11:00 or 12:00 most nights playing video games, talking on the phone or doing stuff on the computer. I also ( Read more... )

Y'all leaning towards 504 or IDEA?

Sorry, I've spent the last four years going through the Student Support Process for cases like these:

Express Concern
Gather Data
Define Needs
Develop Plan
Implement Plan
Evaluate Plan
Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

If you want help translating assessment reports into intelligible English, just let me know!

I was told we should shoot for an IDEA but if that doesn't work to fall back on the 504. Thank you for the offer, I'm sure I'll be bugging you about it! :)

The two big differences:

1) If a student has a disability, meets the criteria of one or more eligibility categories, and needs specially designed instruction to benefit from a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), then they are eligible for IDEA. If they have a disability, but do not need specially designed instruction, they may be eligible for Section 504 ( ... )

Oh I see... well the thing we are finding is that what he has is not behavioral or emotional, so to speak, he is able to stay in the classroom we just need to figure out how to allow him extra time to do tests and assignments. I've been told this is not out of the realm of possibility. I have a therapist and the psychiatrist willing to go to bat with me over this because it is a rather unusual situation. He's incredibly intelligent. He's enrolled in the Duke University TIP program, scored very well on the CAT5 tests (it's a Kentucky thing) and is a whiz at computers. The problem is the speed at which he can absorb and process data.

Wow. I'm so glad that they figured out what was wrong with The Boy. I think my cousin has the same thing that he does with the building up of water in the brain, but my cousin had surgery to put a tube that will drain the water from his brain and have it come out of his body as urine.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you how his marks improve. Have you spoken to the school already? Have they been accommodating?

Yeah that's hydrocephalus alright... my son has a shunt that was put in when he was 11 months old. It drains into the abdomen where it is absorbed quickly.

Normally, this is detected very early but in his case, he was getting some drainage so he didn't have the tell-tale signs of a large head.

I haven't spoke to the school yet. I have to wait until I receive the written report and have it in hand before much can be done.

Good to hear from you! I hope you are doing well. :) hugs
