Civility

Why can't people, in various online forums in which political or religious topics are discussed, be civil? Why can't they treat each other with basic human dignity? Why can't they provide an argument politely, without calling people names

I've been arguing with Gnostics, so I know it wasn't me.

No, not you, my friend. It was actually a political post by a friend of mine. I responded (respectfully) about my disagreement. And 'a whole nuther' person started berating me for, evidently, being an idiot.

Oh, well. Reminds me of why I stopped being so 'political' in the first place.

I am glad to read just now that you have come back to LiveJournal. I have missed your entries. As I have caught up on your journal, I am sure the transitions through which you are passing have been difficult yet joyful, particularly with your vocational calling at nyack. I hope everything works out well for you.

Thanks for responding. Things are well with me for the most part I suppose. A little older, a little more cynical, yet still I have hope. I don't write here as often for whatever reason. I am glad you are back here. Makes me want to hang around a little more. I pray things will work out for you and your family and your work and the sell of your home back in Pennsylvania and your finances and whatever bout you have had with a bit of depression. You've been on a long journey and I have a feeling you will land on your feet. Peace my friend.

I'm sorry that things got out of hand like that. My friends list is pretty diverse, and sometimes it can get out of hand (like in said post's responses).

I may not agree with everything my friends believe, but I won't go around insulting them and calling them names.

Oh, you have nothing to be sorry about. I know full well that you are capable of intelligent discourse, even with those who (like me) disagree with you on topics political.

I just think I probably won't be engaging you in political discourse on your blog very much, because of people like that.

But it's not an indication of my respect for you, certainly.
