Water Underground

I usually have a starkly unsentimental view of death. But the passing of Shannon has made me sadder than any death in recent memory. I only saw her once, in Vancouver, when she had me literally banging on the balcony railing from the shock of her words. I remember thinking how much Laura would have loved her. We talk a lot about women in poetry ( Read more... )

Someone directed me to this post and I want to thank you for it. I agree with you about gravestones. They are a fixed spot for the survivors while the spirit of the one we've lost is flowing freely. Shannon's ashes will be scattered at sea off the coast of Corpus Christi. A compromise really. If she had her way, she would probably want to be scattered off the coast of South Africa from the bow of the Picton Castle - a tall ship that sails around the world. She planned to sign up as crew on it after graduation. However, that's too far for us to travel and too far out of reach for me to go commune with my memories. So, I've chosen a spot that she also loved. Her ashes will travel where she wills them to go from there ( ... )

Being linked to water is one thing, being named for a confluence of waters is another. I guess I'll remember her as a place where many things met.

Funny thing about us poets is that even one poem, one moment, is enough to make you love somebody. Though I was only a livejournal friend for the most part, the moment I met her, in one of her finest moments as a poet, back in Vancouver, was enough to cast a memory of her that's completely indelible. I think you must have done good.
