I looked at facebook - only 2 people had outstanding requests for me, desertrown had something like 30. Not like I'm petty or anything, but I deactivated my account

We haven't been - it hasn't really made the headlines here at all. desertrowan decided to go on and see what it was all about, and she either had a load of people who had already searched for her email address and so had invites waiting, or she uploaded her gmail address book and that found loads of friends ... I'm not sure which.
You can probably find her pretty easily now if you want.

Dude, I checked and there are something like 37 people with your name on facebook. You have to accept that it's going to be harder for your friends to find you unless you put up a picture and join a bunch of networks or wait for them to connect to you through desertrowan or someone else already on.

No silly - it's not that I want my friends to find me ... it's that I want my friends to have been so desperately trying to find me already that they've been left messages with my email address on them just in case!
Actually, it's not even that, I was just having fun bugging desertrowan about having a million more friends than me, but it turns out she may have cheated and accidentally uploaded her gmail address book which found people for her, not vice versa.
