WTF, mate? Justice Department on Gay Marriage

Jun 15, 2009 09:48

So this gay couple is suing the Federal Government to chuck out the Defense Of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, because it keeps them from getting federal married-person benefits, even though they were legally married in their home state. Obama's position on gay marriage has been "nuanced". As I recall, he favors repealing DOMA, but hasn't come ( Read more... )

He's already been doing things on DADT. He's been writing apologetic letters to people and sending them on their way.

My take on the topic is that the President is Just Another Politician(TM) and doesn't want to touch gay marriage because (1) it's still a hot issue and (2) he just doesn't care that much. Cowardly, yes, but not terribly surprising. And to be fair to that Bush holdover, he wasn't the ONLY author; people are just focusing on him because he's a Bush employee and a Mormon.

It'd still be super easy to disavow it if they wanted to, they just don't seem that interested.

Obama has always been against "gay marriage" and only vaguely for civil unions. It's one of the main reasons I didn't vote for him in the primary. In fact, while I appreciate steps like his Council on Women and Girls, I'm seriously pissed off that he hasn't gotten rid of "Don't ask, don't tell" like he promised. At least with gay marriage everyone knew what they were getting.

He may be excellent at understanding and talking about social disparities, but he's really lacking in the "application of your goddamn knowledge" department.

I'm trying to think of something to say that isn't just grumbling and growling.

I read your links, including some of that brief. The language there is pretty rich. "We're just maintaining the status quo!" is my favorite "reason" so far.

I understand that a president has many things to do when so many people are demanding various things from his office. But to me it just looks like the current occupants of the White House don't want to alienate a significant portion of the voter pool. I must say, though, that the statements about DOMA did go beyond the hemming and hawing I expected.

It's hard to think coolly about a deeply personal matter.
