The kids were unnerved about the swine flu issue today, so I decided to have them read two articles about the situation--one from the local paper, and one from the BBC. 80% of my students are Mexican, and they move routinely between here, Mexico and California. He is coming with me to Georgia this weekend for a wedding, and in the process, will meet my family. Instead of being concerned in the least, I am so proud to have him on my arm to introduce to those I love, who have seen me in both the good and the bad. They will rejoice for me, and love him ... :-).

I was a bit distracted in recent weeks, then realized something strange: my kids actually care; they actually trust me; I have a relationship with whole classes at a time. We have a history, and even when it is partially bad, it means something to both them and myself.
