Who doesn't have McPheever? This one.

Dear Ms McPhee:

Decent human beings do not ape Jane Monheit's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on national television. Stealing riffs from a recent brilliant jazz artist is only okay when you're drunk at a karoke bar.

Shame on you, Katherine. Shame on you.

Sincerely,
Emjoy

And that makes me even madder joyofem May 18 2006, 06:44:24 UTC
Because even if she doesn't get American Idol, the first thing that's going to happen is Broadway will hand her a lead on a silver platter without even auditioning her. I know people with ten times the talent and charisma (you included) who would kill for that chance.

Right down to the acapella intro. It's like the time someone tried to copy Ella Fitzgerald. Oh wait. That was still her. At least Randy called her on that one.

I didn't make it up. People actually suffer from said disease. But I think I made up the term...um...uh...Dang it, I'm a hack, too.

True. joyofem May 18 2006, 06:50:48 UTC
It would have been a crime if she had done a Judy Garland impression (God knows no one I know does that (or has it filed on her resume under "special skills)), but at least people would have recognized it. The reason this particular ape-ing killed me is because she copied an artist that not many people know (even though they ought to) and the judges claimed that this contestant "made it her own." She didn't. At all. Except for three very nasal shrieky notes, the rest was a good impression of Jane Monheit.
