"No official proposal to create such a program has been announced publicly, but veterans groups wrote a pre-emptive letter last week to President Obama voicing their opposition to the idea after hearing the plan was under consideration."
I find it hard to get worked up about rumors of phantom proposals that are "under consideration" but so far seem to have no validity at all. And isn't Sec. Shinzeki the one actually proposing it? He's a retired four-star general, I don't think he's out of touch with what veterans need.
Generals that high up are usually so out of touch of what most personnel needs are that it is hard to believe they are in the same military. E-3s and E-4s, which make up the majority of the military, don't get chauffeurs, personal aircraft, elegant dinners, all the golf they can muster, and people kissing your ass 24/7.
However, that being said, I'd still like to know why military members should pay for injuries acquired in the line of duty. If you were to fall at work and permanently injure yourself, your employer would be liable for those injuries.
Oh I don't think vets should pay for their medical care, but my point is more that there's no real story here. There's a rumor of a proposed policy decision, that's neither confirmed nor denied from the White House, and that would also be DOA according to Congress if such a hypothetical proposal was actually brought forth. (Which, if you didn't notice, that quote came from a Democratic Senator.) It just seems odd to get worked up about something that doesn't actually exist in any meaningful way.
All of these military budget cutbacks have me petrified. I should be very thankful that my husband has a job... but, we're required to move soon. The Navy is coming to move our crap, but we are footing the bill for moving me in terms of gas, food and anything else... for the time being anyway. We are supposed to be getting reimbursed, but we have been informed that it may be months before we see the reimbursement. The family dislocation allowance we are supposedly entitled to will show up in some undisclosed amount of time. I am somewhat concerned that it will just never show up and I don't think that there's anyone that can really MAKE the Navy give it to us. What if they just decided that they retroactively can't give it to us

That's terrible, and I don't think you are being spoiled at all. You are an adult worrying about where the paychecks are going to come from.
The military is one of our only defenses against complete annihilation. Why our country isn't completely kissing the military members' asses is beyond me.
I live about 3 blocks away from Union Square in San Francisco. Right downtown, actually around the corner from SF MOMA. Drinks will be had! Or lunch, whatever you prefer. As a current unemployed fatass, I know all the good places to eat AND drink. :)
Sweet! I was looking at the hostels around SF, and there is one right in Union Square. We're trying to find people with empty couches to crash with, but hostelling is so much fun and is our next option.
But we will DEFINITELY meet up. I'm wanting to go somewhere that is really unique, not touristy, has a lot of personality, and has really great food. I've never been interested in snooty, 4-star restaurants. Check out this entry for my favorite food places to get an idea.
That would be so much fun! You'll get to see my unusual style of wit and quirkiness in person!
Have you been here before? Do you have a neighborhood preference? I know a lot of good places, just depends on if you want to walk there, take the bus, don't mind BART or what have you.
If your plans change to early May, let me know, 'cuz toadyjoe and I are currently planning to go roadtripping up the coast of CA (starting in soCal) the first week of May, inclusing visiting grissom_774 and others
