A few years back my whole family trekked from the train station to MoMA in the freezing ass dead of winter, only to find out that it's closed on Wednesdays...punk-ass bitches.

yeah, it was pretty exciting seeing all that great art first-hand instead of through a book, on TV, etc. i've had friends who have done what your family did before. now, i think, it's closed on tuesday's and a bunch of people i know went in on a tuesday, spur of the moment, and were pretty bummed out when they found it was closed.
