Oh goodness, that sounds like an incredibly frustrating situation and a very valid thing to complain about!
You shouldn't feel compelled to get back into a relationship if you're just not feeling it--making yourself unhappy won't benefit anyone. My parents were always rather unhappy together, and for my sister and I, it was a HUGE relief when they got divorced and stopped living together. It was (and still is) so much easier to be able to be happy with either parent individually than it ever was to be constantly slightly uncomfortable with both of them together! That's just my experience and everyone's different, but I'm sure you're a fabulous mother to your son regardless of where you live or how much money you make! I'm sure it's tough to be presented with the option of giving him more, but I think you're very sensible to hold your ground and do what you think is best for you both :)
Er, hope I'm not overstepping and being totally invasive with this comment!
Ugh, that's tough about people tending to feel bad for him. Even if he's deserving of sympathy, you can still be practical about whether or not you can handle living with him for the rest of your life! :)
Livejournal is so great for offloading, I'd completely forgotten how therapeutic it can be!
Stick to your guns, my friend. Stick to your guns. Your complaints are completely valid!
I am neither old nor wise (I'm 35). I'm single, don't have kids, and have no real idea what you're going through. But I can say (with my extra decade's perspective ;)) that you've got a whole lot of life to look forward to without him around to weigh you down further. Who knows what wonderful things the future will bring?
