I had my 36-week appointment today. My doctor was really late and was behind on all of her patients, so I ended up waiting for 2 hours before I even got to see her. Bummer. =( Anyway, I gained 6 pounds this week, but she didn't get onto me and she thinks that a lot of that weight gain is due to water weight. I've been very swollen these last few ( Read more... )

I am definitely not one of those people who is against c-sections or inductions or anything like that, but unless there's a proven medical need I don't think the doctor should be pushing you into either one of those options. I've seen very petite women give birth to ten pound babies vaginally, so don't have the doctor scare you into thinking that just because the baby is big that there's no way the baby will fit. If you are medically induced it does raise your chances of needing a c-section quite high, which is one of the biggest risks of going that route. Personally, I don't see the harm, as long as everything looks good and healthy with the baby, in letting your body try to go into labor naturally and see how it works out. Worse case you might need a c-section anyway, but at least you would know that you tried to avoid it.

I agree with ephah. I'm not anti-induction or c-section either, but I think there is some value in going into birth naturally, or at least waiting until after you go past your due date. Also, I've heard that it's not the baby's overall size/weight that is generally the issue, but rather the baby's position and head size.

Agreed with the two above and I know this anecdotal and doesn't equal evidence but with my first, I'm 5'5 and weighed (pre-pregnancy) about 100lbs, gave birth to a ten pounds munchkin and had absolutely no complications. I'd say do what you feel your body is comfortable with and leave yourself open to whatever may need to happen along the way.

And good luck and stay in good spirits, girl, trust your body--it won't let ya down :)

My co-worker had her son about a month ago and she was scared because her doctor kept warning her that her baby was going to be large. They induced her more than a week before her due date because they were afraid of the baby getting much larger than the estimated ultrasound size ( ... )

I have to say I agree with the above comments.
I would like to add that if you do want to do this naturally, I suggest reading successful birth stories about naturally birthing a 9/10/11/12 pound baby instead of c-section stories.

So much good has been said so far, I don't have much to add except for take things one step at a time, and breathe. Breathe breathe breathe! Stressing will definitely make the baby come sooner ( ... )
