Fred Hampton is pretty amazing. And you know, they have streets named for civil rights activists all the time -- why shouldn't he be included, ya know?

because the damn cops can't admit that they ever might have been wrong about anything. they can't admit to the fact that there was rampant racism in the department 40 YEARS AGO. there still is, but jesus, things can never get better until they face up to the past.

You know, I've always thought that Chicago is like a sociology major's dream city. There's so much going on there with the racism and poverty, amongst other things. And it seems like Chicago cops always came in and made the demonstrations in the 60's there take that one turn for the worse, with the tear gas and the riot gear. They were out of pocket for sure. But then again, that's probably why you all have such good sociology schools up there.

geography as well. the first urban geography studies ever were done here back in the 20s & 30s, mapping all the ethnic neighborhoods. it's still pretty much the same, very segregated into lots of little categories.
