just added another level to my hell. reading about it this morning was DREADFUL. I mean - WHAT IS THE DEAL with this? AUSTRALIA is meant to be good. Was discussing with Miltem yesterday, we had both decided that if we emigrated NZ is the one.
I know, rather obviously I'm furious at the moment.
Because I don't believe in using female genitalia as a negative expletive, I left it at bastards, but there were alot of other words running around in my head.
Yep, 5000 brave, brave men. What astonishes me is that all it took was one TXT message to be sent around and 5000 people showed up! ARGH!! Imagine if they had put up flyers for a week!
Sweety, we're running out of places to go anymore!
But yes, it's incredibly depressing that it was so easy to amass that number of supporters etc. But I'm also not all that surprised- given the fact that even I got 'speak like an Australian or go home' (from a teacher no less), and 'if you don't like it go home' (how dare an Australian citizen hold an opinion- albeit a citizen born overseas)- and I'm white and English-speaking.
But of course, I'm not implying that Australia is a bigoted, racist country. That would be treason.
NOTE: And there are many Australian individuals who are not this way. Nonetheless, sadly, they're not the ones we here about, or the ones who scream the loudest.
In a country where even the earliest civilizations were multicultural, this kind of shit should not have occurred.
For those who looked to violence as a solution to a problem that should not exist, I'd like to see how enriched your lives are had Australia had been less influenced by the cultures you discriminate.
Such a comfort too, less than a month before I venture into Sydney.
Well- basically it's fuelled by some of the same issues. The interesting thing is that, because Australia is so multicultural, Cronulla (for example) is considered a 'white ghetto' essentially. Basically (and rather amazingly) John Howard is right and it's a reversion to tribalism- since this has to do with percieved 'infringement' on, in this case 'white territory'- though I don't know how much this would have occured had the key group frequenting the area been Asian for instance- a lot of it has to do with this terrorism crap, aside from just nationalism- but what's truly mazing is that they've urged attacks against women as well, which has (prior to now) been relatively unusual- the exemption being the call for retalliatory raping of Muslim women that occured a few years ago, when there were a few Middle Eastern gangs (small gangs, mind) going after Western women. Those cases were really ugly- but even then I don't think it ever happened (though of curse, if it did, the likelihood of it being reported is pretty small I would say
