“Daddy?”

Kibum looks up from his laptop and over the organized mess of papers scattered on the kitchen table - his makeshift desk whenever he works from home - to see Suhyun standing in the doorway, absentmindedly twirling her long hair with a finger. She’s wearing her navy blue headband, the one with little white music notes on it also known as Jonghyun’s favourite, and Kibum suddenly has a slight suspicion that she is aware of exactly what day it is.

“Can you come to the living room?” she asks with wide eyes, hopeful almost.

“Sure?” Kibum agrees, confused, but shuts his computer and follows his daughter when she scampers off to the living room. Myungki isn’t there, which is strange because he thought they had been playing together like they often do. He frowns when he sees Jonghyun, who looks equally confused, join them, followed by a smiling Myungki. Suhyun beams in turn and Kibum thinks his children are way too good at plotting, especially as each other’s accomplices.

Syhyun sits at the piano tucked in a corner of the room, scooting over so that Myungki can sit beside her on the bench.

“Sit,” Suhyun orders more than she tells them, and Kibum looks blankly at Jonghyun for a second, but Jonghyun only shrugs, evidently not in on it. Kibum settles himself on the floor by the piano since the couch faces the other way and Jonghyun does the same behind him, placing his legs on either side of Kibum. He slides closer, hands circling Kibum’s waist to tug him back and Kibum barely has time to get comfortable against his chest when a wriggling mound of tan fur tackles him. Juliette is in his lap before he knows it, licking and nipping at his fingers like they were toys; their dog has the uncanny ability to sense whenever any of them sit down, probably thinking it means playtime. Kibum wonders if she’ll ever grow out of it because she’s already well on her way to being an adult and yet still every bit the overgrown puppy.

She eventually calms down, enough to lie down beside them. Her tail is still wagging lazily as Jonghyun pats her flank, his other arm around Kibum. She nuzzles Kibum’s thigh when he scratches her head. Their careful taming is interrupted when Suhyun clears her throat, commanding their attention once more before announcing grandly: “Happy Father’s Day!”

“We practiced something,” Myungki adds and suddenly all the time they spent whispering to each other at the piano makes sense and if Kibum’s heard them practice together before, well, that’s really not the point.

He feels Jonghyun squeeze him before hooking his chin over his shoulder, and Kibum leans back into his embrace with a smile.

“Thank you,” Jonghyun says, tone amused but sincere.

“That’s very sweet of you, thank you,” Kibum adds, more seriously.

The kids look pleased as they place their fingers on the keys. Myungki counts down the tempo and an upbeat melody that Kibum has already heard countless times begins. He can tell there are a few mistakes here and there, but it’s still a wonderful performance and Kibum has the feeling Jonghyun may or may not have bitten his lips once or twice to keep from shedding a tear. They clap heartily once the piece is over, startling Juliette who was finally dozing off by their side. When Kibum twists around to look at Jonghyun, surely enough the elder’s eyes are a bit glassy but without tear tracks. Kibum rolls his eyes fondly and places a kiss to his nose before untangling himself from Jonghyun’s grasp to stand up and hug his children. He is so taking them out for ice cream later - the sweet, frozen kisses from puffy, sticky lips are simply an added bonus.
