It's not all about how much pain a person feels at the time of his execution. While an execution should be performed quickly and flawlessly, the time between sentencing and death passes with plenty of suffering as well. The "eye for an eye" argument seems fair, but cannot ever truly happen. The bottom line is that people put to death (in theory, any way) did something first to deserve that punishment.
