I think it's got this sort of 1920s/1930s jazz club appeal, and I think that's why you like it.

I definately know what you mean, they have sort of a haunted sound. Slightly out of tune violins are cool too, if used correctly. If you've never heard The Dance of Death (Danca Macaba sp?) by Saint S-something french (it's the guy who wrote carnival of the animals) you should listen too it.
