new song demo

Andrew asked that I record scratch guitar and vocals for the song I'm currently working on so that he'll have something to guide him when it's time to lay down the percussion. Everyone went to some party tonight that I didn't much feel like attending, leaving me with a good opportunity to have the studio to myself for recording that sort of thing ( Read more... )

Are you gonna use an electric in the band? Cause all that reverb on an acoustic is a little distracting. The reverb on your vocals is real nice though. They have a Lennonesque quality.
I could see it building into a big fuckin wall of sound crescendo, but that's a device I tend to default to when I'm writing something, so...so.

i'm not certain. my initial concept of what the finished song would be like didn't include any acoustic guitar at all. the wall of sound idea is exactly what i wanted, but never having produced it before i assumed it would just be an electric for rhythm with some kind of big spacey effect on it. all the verb and delay made it very hard to play along with the click track, which is why i put some acoustic there for the drummer.

i couldn't figure out how to get the PA to output to the mbox so i ended up using one of the shitty mics (condenser needs power from the PA) and everything was very quiet, so i ended up triple tracking everything. while i did this i figured i could effect some of the dupe tracks and end up with interesting noises, and the acoustic guitar eventually sounded somewhat similar to the sound i had in my head.

hmm, i actually think the opposite of the above person. I really like the accoustic dreamy sound stuff, it sounds like outside in the city in the fall, being quiet. but i don't like your voice being all sort of distant. i like the wall of sound idea, though; i would suggest doing the dreamy accoustic thingy as an intro, for some significant amount of time to let the feeling sink in, before adding sounds and sharpening up.
one thing i think this song could use structurally is a bridge. it has a beautiful sound and constant repetision sort of numbs me to this by the end-- though i really like the very last bit.

It's one of your strongest songs yet. I've been playing it on a loop & missing you.

i'm finding the reverb on the acoustic guitar a tad strong. there's a slight jerky feeling there that i think is counter to the feeling of the song. i also am of the opinion that the song could use a bridge, as it begins to feel a little monotonous towards the end.

that said, i really like it conceptually. i'll mess around on some violin parts maybe this week. don't think i'll be able to get around to it right away.
