For the last few days it has been somewhat warm considering we are well into October already. This makes for wonderful foggy days.

An October fog when the leaves have turned all shades of red and yellow is amazingly comforting a sight. Combined with the (relative) warmth, the outdoor air feels like the fuzziest of soft blankets imaginable. The ( Read more... )

Nice imagery.

Reminds of my first 30 years living in Western NY. In the south, the coloration never reaches the same intensity, nor is the crispness in the air quite the same.

Having lived in this climate for practically all my life, I have grown to expect there to be seasons, and clear variation from month to month. Not all of it is unequivocally pleasurable, but on the whole, this is what life is for me.

this is not an end, it is simply preparation for new births in months to come. saare_snowqueen October 6 2007, 15:46:47 UTC
This is beautiful. I think you're writing about yourself. The piece is poetry. Well done.

Umm. This is awkward. You see, I don't do poetry. Not me. And still you are not the first to make that accusation. Hmph.

I have always liked autumn. It is time of serenity, in contrast to the frantic fruitfulness and multiplication of spring and summer.

...my favorite season as well. 'Course autumn down here, won't be until late November. Today, Oct 5, it is 91 degrees F (32.7 C)with 61% humidity.

All through August and early September is was 102-104 F(38-40 C). Ugh..

Then finally we have this LONG, SLOW, gentle progression to winter. Autumn is wonderfu.

You know, Finnish Meteorolgical Institute has an official definition for temperatures over +25 °C (77 °F). Those are called "extremely warm". And when it gets much above that, I will become rather useless for any physical activity.

We are having an abnormally warm and rainless autumn so far, too. Humidity has meant a foggy morning respite of a couple hours before another bright, hot, all wrong weather day sets in. But the days are shorter, and the garden knows it. The mature plants are winding down even as seeds, confused by the heat, are germinating hopefully. Poor dears.

And as I break up the headless stalks of sunflowers I am mentally hauling compost, turning the soil, and figuring out what to plant where next year; seeing the garden-that-will-be under spring skies in my mind's eye.
