I was reading on Scientific American about the Traveler's Dilemma.  The article explains this quandary thusly:

Value as opposed to price is a thorny issue - especially when it comes to wage setting. Especially when you consider how people that offer true value to society, through teaching, healthcare, law enforcement, rescue services are recompensed by society, as opposed to professions such as advertising executive...
