If only there was a way to get Portal without the rest of the Orange Box, on consoles. It's cheap on Steam for less than $20 until the end of the year...
Believe me, I already know the joy of Portal, and I was intending on getting the Orange Box for PC instead of the 360 for the expanded content and netplay.
You picked the wrong system for "I don't like FPS games and I like RPGs".
However you can go for Eternal Sonata, and try renting The Orange Box to play Portal. I also recommend downloading Every Extend Extra Extreme (E4), Geometry Wars, and Castlevania SOTN. Also Rez when it gets released.
I highly recommend looking into Gears of War as well, which although it plays very FPS-ish is actually an extremely well done shooter. Condemned is also fun for being very original in the genre, since it focuses mainly on melee combat.
I've heard awesome things about the new Ace Combat, and I highly recommend trying out some game demos when you get the chance. There's some seemingly shitty "A-list" titles that are actually really fun, and the demos are a good way to find out what you like.
Right, I do want to download Castlevania, and the X-Box Live Arcade is one of the reasons why I wanted a 360 in the first place. Also, I have played Portal and love it, I just think that the PC edition of the Orange Box would be the better buy.
Eternal Sonata... haven't heard of that one. I'll have to look it up.
Eternal Sonata is also known as "Trusty Bell", I believe. I played the demo of Trusty Bell and was supremely disappointed. Within a month the game was down to 3000 yen in second hand stores in Japan... if that tells you anything of the quality of the game. :/
Also, everyone loves gears -- I hate FPS's, TPS's, and everything... and guess what, I also hated GoW. :/ It was a horrible game. It looked horrible, the story was horrible, and it played horribly. It's darn near impossible if you don't play online co-op with a half-way decent player.
E4 is neat, but it's just like its counterpart on the PSP. XBL arcade is overall not worth it... especially if you have the systems the other games were on.
I will agree, though, the cool thing about the 360 is the ability to play demos. But most of the time I find myself completely repelled from the game. I guess it's a good way to save money, though. ... after I already dropped like 500 on the system and hard drive... to find that there are nearly no games I like for the system.
XBL is definitely not worth it for a 360. It has a few good games, but honestly... you can play SotN on your PS2 if you want -- it's the same game
( ... )
Well, the primary reasons why I'm buying it is for Rock Band and Guitar Hero III along with X-Box Live Arcade, which does have a lot of good games out for it that I do want. And since finding a PS1 copy of SoTN is extremely difficult for me, it's the easiest way for me to get it.
Also, a lot of my friends locally have told me that Blue Dragon is a good game, so at the very least, I'll try and get a used copy of it, if anything because I'm curious about how good Sakaguchi is outside of Square-Enix.
Mass Effect. While it has F(T?)PS-styled controls, it's an RPG. And it's a damn fun one. Also has a much better realized world than most RPGs. Don't listen to the people who say that the menus are confusing, I found them to be very intuitive.
Assassin's Creed. This one might be more of a rental, but it's a good time. Everything Yahtzee says about it in Zero Punctuation is 100% true but I'm still recommending it. It's that fun.

No Xbox recommendations, though. Don't got one!

I thought it was great until disc 2. Then it was just downhill to the point where I quit on Disc 3. :/
